At age 9 little David found a book in Russian called "Electronic Computational Machines" at the library and, after reading it in a single weekend, decided that this was what he wanted to do with his life. Three years later he finally got to touch a computer for the first time and discovered that it was totally worth the wait. One thing led to another and now he’s an architect at Proofpoint. David is a software developer with over 20 years of industry experience, speaker, trainer, blogger and co-author of “Pro Couchbase Server”. He specializes in distributed system architectures and exotic databases.

At the past 2 years I am leading the R&D group at Oribi, a big-data based product, where we handle billions of events a day, while scaling both the system and the engineering group. My main focus is to create processes that support high scale & high standards; striving to maintain scalable R&D groups and infrastructure environments, while investing in personal growth and deployments quality.

Andres leads a team of experienced Data Scientists in Riskified. Over the years, he has lead end-to-end researches and has been a key player in building the data science infrastructure. Even though his background is in Social Sciences, he is passionate about Machine Learning technologies and infrastructure. Andres is originally from Uruguay, and despite he has been living in Israel for the last 12 years, he still wakes up in the middle of the night to watch the games of the Uruguayan soccer team.

In this talk we’ll go back over 20 years to the dawn of the modern big data age and look at the engineering challenges, technological advancements, and paradigm shifts that brought us from the humble relational databases of two decades ago to the massively distributed cloud data architectures that we have today.
Data warehousing has come a long way in the past few years, solving many challenges like cost efficiency of storing huge amounts of data and computing over it; but at the same time it introduced a new set of challenges since the optimal data warehouse is one that has immutable data. For some, it was harder to adopt modern data warehousing technologies because of cases where data still needs to keep changing due to business requirements (reference data updates for example) , compliance (e.g. GDPR) or others. Today there are three leading technology solutions to this, each unique in its own way - DeltaLake, Apache Hudi and Apache Iceberg. All three are meant to add mutability to data warehousing. In this talk we will examine each, understand how they work, and look at strengths and weaknesses of each of them. There are indeed differences, and by the end of this talk you will be able to understand whether one of those can help you in your data journey; and if so, which one would fit your use-case best.
Maintaining a modern data platform is a difficult task, and a big chunk of it being difficult is the challenge of ruling the data, storing and updating metadata, and creating observability around it. A fancy word for this would be Data governance. I'm going to talk about the challenge of governing data in a data lake distributed environment and how we do it in Yotpo.
